NEW VONNEGUT COLLECTION

Armageddon in Retrospect, a new collection of unpublished fiction and nonfiction by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. will be on sale on April 1.   Vonnegut is a favorite and one of the best selling authors at our stores and we were saddened when he died last year.  But even though I'm often wary of books published posthumously,  this new collection of stories, essays and letters introduced by his son, Mark, sounds fascinating.  The fiction includes stories about time travel, the impossibility of peace in the world, and a tale in which Dr. Lucifer Mephisto teaches his charges about the nature of good and evil.  In his last speech, Vonnegut suggested how we should behave during the Apocalypse - "We should be unusually kind to one another, certainly.  But we should also stop being so serious.  Jokes help a lot.  And get a dog, if you don't already have one."

RECENT EVENTS

SF & F Authors Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman visited Kazoo Books!  Signed copies in stock.

We welcomed authors Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman to our Parkview store on Wednesday, November 7.  Ellen read from her new children's book, The Golden Dreydl, and from her Locus Award winning fantasy novel, The Privilege of the Sword.  Delia read from her first novel for young adults, Changeling, and from a book she co-edited, Interfictions: An Anthology of Interstitial Writing.

Both authors spoke on the importance of myths and the fantastic in our lives and in fiction.  They each have a story in the new collection, The Coyote Road: Trickster Tales, and spoke about the role of the trickster and/or the fool in myths and folktales and about how fun it is to write those characters.

They discussed how much great fantasy and science fiction is being published now and how many authors are combining genres to create surprising, challenging fiction.

After taking questions, Ellen and Delia chatted and signed books for everyone there and also signed copies for stock for each store.  Their books would make wonderful holiday gifts for the fantasy reader on your list.

Jim Hines and Tobias Buckell

Authors Jim Hines and Tobias Buckell  stopped by on their way to Windycon in Chicago on Friday, November 9th. Jim's latest books include Goblin Quest and Goblin Hero.  His Goblin War will be out in March, 2008. Toby's newest novel is Ragamuffin. His first book, Crystal Rain, is now out in paperback.

We have signed copies of their books available!

RECENT FEATURED BOOKS

The January Sci-Fi book was Soldier of Sidon by Gene Wolfe.  Gene is the author of the epic The Book of the New Sun, as well as Operation Ares, Peace, and The Fifth Head of Cerberus.

He is often praised by his peers, including Neil Gaiman and Michael Swanwick.

In December, we read and discussed Majestrum by Matthew Hughes.

Mr. Hughes has written a number of books, including Fools Errant, Downshift, Fool me Twice, Gullible's Travels, and Black Brillion.  He is also the author of the nonfiction books Breaking Trail and What's All This Got to Do with the Price of 2x4s?

His short stories have appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Issac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, and Postscripts Magazine.

Our November book was Undertow by Elizabeth Bear. Novo Haven, a floating city on Greene's World, is a place people go to to escape. Andre Deschenes is an assassin who wants to branch out into conjuring, manipulating probability, and changing odds. The world is controlled by the ruthless Charter Trade Company, which knows of more undercurrents flowing in this backwater than it wants to acknowledge: mining is eroding the native population, the ranids; the material being mined is no ordinary substance; and mining operations are destroying the planet.

Our October book was The Dog Said Bow-Wow by Michael Swanwick. This new collection of his short stories features three "Darger and Surplus" stories, which were among the group's favorites.  Also included was an original novelette, "The Skysailor's Tale."  We agreed than Swanwick is a masterful writer and many of his stories are clever and amusing, but that many of the stories here weren't terribly memorable.  One of John's favorite scenes was from "Legions in Time," when to determine when in time the characters are from, they're asked, "Gas - for lights or for cars?" and "Apples - for eating or computing?"
